I'm a TV critic and these are 3 Netflix series you can binge in one night

Any Netflix user can easily spend more time browsing through possible options than actually watching something. The offering is changing on a near daily basis, it can be difficult to know what to dedicate most of your binging time to. As a television critic, it's part of the job to have an answer to that question. So what about options that make the most of your time? A series that will get you hooked and able to binge watch, in just a single evening? The picks below imagine you settling down between 3 and 4pm, you'll probably be ordering food in, unless you're talented enough to binge on a second screen while cooking. We'll aim to have you rolling credits on the final episode in time for bed, although that could be a little after midnight. This does rule out many hit shows with multiple seasons, you'll definitely need more than one sitting for that and so they can wait a little longer. Nevertheless, here are my top three recommendations. A second season of Supacell is on the way (Image: Netflix) Supacell Seasons: 1 Episodes: 6 Approx. total runtime: 5 1/4 hours Supacell is about a group of five ordinary people who unexpectedly develop superpowers. They have little in common except for one thing: they are all Black South Londoners. It is down to one man, Michael Lasaki, to bring them all together in order to save the woman he loves. While the storyline sets up a superhero story, there are touches of social commentary on real-world issues such as racial profiling, knife crime, and workplace inequality. Being a British made series, it comes in at a pacey six episodes. It boasts a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 100% score and was even nominated for a BAFTA in the Best Drama category. While there is only one season to catch up on right now, a second is reported to be on the way. There is no better time to make sure you're ready for when that lands. One fan said: "Excellent first season. Fascinating take on the superhero genre. Well written and well acted. Can't help but be drawn into the characters. Can't wait for season 2!" Supacell is streaming on Netflix. American Vandal Fans should at least binge the first season of American Vandal (Image: Netflix) Seasons: 2 Episodes: 16 Approx. total runtime: Season One: 4 3/4 hours Season Two: 4 1/2 hours While there are two seasons of American Vandal, most episodes only stretch to around 30 minutes. The exception is both finales last about 40 minutes total. This makes a one session binge significantly easier. Like Supacell, it also boasts a perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating. However, if you believe fans who shared their opinion of the series on Reddit, then it is only really the first season you need to catch up on. American Vandal is for those who believe they have watched every true crime documentary available on Netflix. It smartly subverts the genre to comedic effect. Utilising a mockumentary style, the first season follows the aftermath of a costly high school prank that left 27 cars belonging to staff vandalized with phallic images. Senior class clown Dylan Maxwell is blamed for the incident and expelled. An aspiring filmmaker and fellow student Peter Maldonado, launches his own investigation into the incident, with help from his friend Sam Ecklund. They are determined to uncover whether Dylan was the one truly behind the crime. The second season follows Peter and Sam as they investigate a new crime. They are essentially hired by a different school to make a follow up film after their cafeteria's lemonade is contaminated by someone calling themselves The Turd Burglar. One fan claimed: "This is the only series on Netflix that I have binged in the true sense of the word. The writing is superb, combining mystery and hilarity. Don't miss it." American Vandal is streaming on Netflix. Living With Yourself Fans say the 2018 title is the epitome of binge worthy (Image: Netflix) Seasons: 1 Episodes: 8 Approx. total runtime: 3 1/2 hours Most fans agree that this is a binge worthy limited series. It stars comedy favourites Paul Rudd and Aisling Bea and its premise could be an idea for a Black Mirror episode. However this story goes on for a manageable eight instalments. Miles, played by Rudd is a man struggling in life. When he undergoes a novel spa treatment that promises to make him a better person, he finds he's been replaced by a new and improved version of himself. As he deals with the unintended consequences of his actions, Miles finds he must fight for his wife Kate (Bea), his career, and his very identity. A fan posted about the show saying: "So perfectly binge worthy, and the only real way to watch it! Classic Paul Rudd- multi-faceted, multi-talented. Can't imagine anyone else in this combination sci-fi dramedy & thoughtful statement on science & society. Very well cast. Absolutely PERFECT ending!!" Living With Yourself is streaming on Netflix.

Gavin Newsom says 'gloves are off' as he issues furious 7-word warning to conservatives

California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a furious warning to conservative media outlets like Fox News saying that the "gloves are off" after suing the network for a staggering $787 million. "The gloves are off. Let's go. We're gonna call out the bullshit. And the propaganda. And the weaponization of lies and disinformation on networks like Fox, and we'll do it in every capacity on behalf of the people I represent and an individual capacity," Newsom said during an interview with MeidasTouch. Saying that he has had "enough," the governor explained the basis of the case by saying that it is "time to assert ourselves much more forcefully with character and conviction and have the backs of people that don't have the voice that some of us have and the ability to do what some of us can do." It came amid the protests in Los Angeles over the president's sweeping immigration enforcement actions and mobilization of National Guard Troops. The governor is seeking at least $787 million in damages as well as a court order prohibiting the conservative network from airing any other segments claiming that he lied about his call with Trump which took place on June 7. "If Fox News wants to lie to the American people on Donald Trump's behalf, it should face consequences- just like it did in the Dominion case," Newsom said in his statement. These punitive damages are identical to the amount Fox had to pay in 2023 to settle a defamation suit filed by Dominion Voting Systems over election conspiracy broadcast. "Until Fox is willing to be truthful, I will keep fighting against their propaganda machine," Newsom added. Newsom's attorneys also demanded a formal retraction and on-air apology from Fox News host Jesse Waters who claimed that the governor had lied about the phone call. Newsom agreed to dismiss the lawsuit if the conditions are met. "Gov. Newsom's transparent publicity stunt is frivolous and designed to chill free speech critical of him. We will defend this case vigorously and look forward to it being dismissed," a Fox News spokesperson told Irish Star US. Newsom told MSNBC on June 8 about a phone call between him and Trump taking place late at night on June 6 in California which is after 1 a.m. June 7 on East Coast time. Trump mobilized the National Guard 24 hours later to quell anti-ICE protesters. On June 10, during a news conference at the White House, when a reporter asked Trump about his call with the California governor, the president said that he called Newsom "a day ago." "Called him to tell him, got to do a better job," Trump said. However, Newsom posted a video clip of the comment on social media, claiming that "there was no call." "There was no call. Not even a voicemail," Newsom wrote, adding, "Americans should be alarmed that a President deploying Marines onto our streets doesn't even know who he's talking to." To respond, Trump provided screenshots of his phone log to Fox News that showed their call on June 6 as opposed to his previous claims of calling him "a day ago." Newsom alleged that during the coverage, Fox News made false video edits and statements, framing the call log as proof that Newsom has reportedly lied about the call.

American Airlines breaks silence after flights grounded in widespread outage

American Airlines has officially broken its silence hours after the company was forced to ground its planes due to a technical issue . The company posted the apology on its X account in response to another tweet. "Our team is awaiting the all-clear to take the air , and we truly apologize for the added wait," the company wrote in response to the angry tweet. We'll have you on your way very shortly." American's statement comes hours after planes were impacted in several hub cities in the U.S and even Guadalajara, Mexico. The apology came after many people called on the company to make an announcement. (Image: AFP via Getty Images) According to the person who tweeted at the company, they had been on board the plane "for hours." One passenger claimed that they had been deplaned because the crew had deemed it "no longer safe to fly." Despite the apology, the airline has yet to publish an official apology on its social media sites. American Airlines had previously replied to another tweet saying, "We know you're ready to be off to your sunny destination. As soon as we have the final sign-off complete, we'll head for the skies! Thank you for packing your patience today." According to the person who tweeted at the company, they had been on board the plane "for hours." (Image: AP) Downdetector reported that several major hubs were affected. According to a map on the site, Los Angeles , Phoenix, Dallas, Washington D.C., New York, and Charlotte were all affected. In response to another tweet saying that they have been sitting on the plane for two hours, the account responded with, "Last minute delays are something we try to avoid. However, weather conditions can cause unexpected changes. Thanks for your extra patience." According to a map on the site, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, Washington D.C., New York, and Charlotte were all affected. (Image: Downdetector) The news of the glitch comes months after an American Airlines flight from JFK International Airport to Delhi was forced to reroute to Rome following threats of a bomb onboard. According to the report, Flight 292 was cruising near Turkmenistan when it was forced to divert. Passengers were able to land safely in Rome, while the authorities are sussing out how serious the bomb threat really is. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, ferrying around 285 souls, found itself escorted to the ground by two Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons. It's currently unknown what sparked the outage. (Image: Getty Images) American Airlines later issued a statement about the ordeal. "Safety and security are our top priorities and we thank our customers for their understanding," they said. "We are working closely with local authorities and will provide updates as the situation develops." In addition to this alleged threat, another flight bound for Charlotte saw police hop on board flight 2863, asking passengers to reveal themselves for what they suspected might be just a "prank." One of the passengers on the flight recalled the collective annoyance on the plane when the officer made the announcement. The officer sharply criticized the "idiot" who wouldn't own up, using choice language. "Eventually we are able to board again and take off but the whole thing was just so f---ing infuriating because after all that they were not even able to determine who the hell did this s---," vented one frustrated passenger.
